Sculpting Our History –
artists and Nobel laureates
confront climate change
Candlestar are working with the
Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership (CPSL) to support
Sculpting Our History - a unique event to be held at the Science
Museum in London on 27 May 2009.
In the context of climate change, Sculpting our History seeks
to explore how seeing as an ‘artist’ can change our perspective, and endeavours
to examine the role of the arts and creativity in ‘sculpting’ our
world in times of crisis, in the past and today.
The event forms part of the 2009 Nobel Laureates Symposium on Climate
Change, hosted by the Cambridge Programme for Sustainability
Leadership (CPSL) with the patronage of HRH The Prince of Wales.
It will bring together around 150 esteemed artists, business
and public sector heads, civil society leaders, academics, scientists
and 20 Nobel Prize winners to begin this dialogue. Alongside
a panel discussion which will include contributions from Nobel
Peace Prize-winner Wangari Maathai, Artistic Director of the
South Bank Centre, Jude Kelly, Artist Heather Ackroyd, and Director
of the Centre for Ecoliteracy, Fritjof Capra, there will be performances
by leading artists from a range of mediums, including Max Eastley
and Lemn Sissay. The event will also feature a presentation of
the outstanding photography submitted for the inaugural Prix
Pictet.
Artist in Residence Programme
Candlestar has been appointed by
The Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment (SSEE) at the
University of Oxford
to develop its first Climate Change Artist in Residence Programme. The
Residency will take place over the next eighteen months during
which a number of high level international meetings and conferences
that will shape the world’s thinking on climate change
will take place. The residency will constitute an efficient way
to communicate effectively and convey important messages to business
leaders, policy-makers, academics and the wider public about
sustainability issues. Over the next few months, Candlestar
will work alongside The Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment
to define aims, secure funding, promote and manage the residency
programme.

Volta NY
Iranian born artist Tahereh Samadi Tari will hold her first solo show at Volta
NY Art Fair, from 5 to 8 March 2009. This year's show, entitled Age of Anxiety,
focuses on areas currently underexposed by the art world (Eastern Europe, the
Middle East and Latin America), while also identifying trends that point towards
newly critical aspects of emerging art. The show’s title—taken from W.H. Auden’s
1948 poem of the same name—suggests reexamination as well as imaginative departures
that herald new beginnings. More…

Candlestar collaboration with Sotheby's
Candlestar's reputation for its work with artists from Iran is growing quickly and we are delighted to partner with Sotheby's and their auction of Modern and Contemporary Arab and Iranian Art. The auction will be held in London on 23 October 2008, and Sotheby's are now accepting consignments for this exciting sale – see the attachment for more information. This collaboration with Sotheby's deepens Candlestar's engagement with Iranian art. Earlier this year we developed 'Whispered Secrets Murmuring Dreams' which is now widely regarded as one of the most important exhibitions of work by emerging Iranian artists in the past three years. Later this year and early next we will show 'The Masques of Sherezade' - a survey exhibition of three generations of woman artists from Iran - in both Dubai and London. In addition to this we have been invited to develop an Iranian Contemporary Art Prize for the London-based charity Magic of Persia. We hope to see you at one of those events and at the Sotheby's auction in October.
