Yassi Golshani

Born in Hamburg in 1967, Yassi Golshani grew up in Iran where she as a young teenager witnessed the Iranian 1979 revolution. She studied painting at the Tehran based Al Zahra University, and thereafter moved to Paris in 1996, where she continued her art studies at the University of Saint Denis-Paris VIII and at the Sorbonne University. In 2005 she obatined a UNESCO scholarship and spent a month doing research and artistic work at the Civitella artistic residence in Italy. In 2007 Yassi was a finalist for the "Sovereign European Art Prize " in London.

Yassi's work and artistic style has evolved during her career. Starting with painting she then moved to making installations including making her well known  sculptures in "papier mache" with Iranian newspapers. Since 2002 she has also been working on a number of video installations. Yassi's work is being influenced by events in her country of origin exploring themes such as hejab - or veil - which is obligatory for women in Iran and also opposing cultures.

Yassi has in recent years exhibited her work in several group shows in Iran and worldwide, including the Masques of Shahrazad in London, in 2009.  Her piece Hafiz Divinatory Poems was donated by Candlestar to Magic of Persia's Magical Nights in Dubai Gala in April 2009, where it was sold for 12,000 USD.
