Surfacing

This exhibition of new works by London based artist Angela Eames took place in the Total Arts Gallery at the Courtyard, Dubai from 19 April to 10 May 2008. It was the first solo show in Dubai for the artist and marked the first collaborative project between Total Arts and Candlestar.

Surfacing’ posed a set of questions about the relationship between the real and virtual world. The exhibited work moved from the drawn to the digital and ended in a series of patterned digital images that were visibly influenced by the shapes and forms of Islamic and Arabian art. Using both the computing environment and traditional drawing knowledge and methods, Eames also installed a site-specific work which directly referenced the Total Arts gallery space. In her London studio, she built a virtual three dimensional replica of the gallery space using second-hand information (floor plan and photographs taken by others) and her knowledge of geometry. From this replica she assembled eight vertical suspended drawings. The resulting work was described as ‘virtually site specific’ since the space was assembled from a distance.

Angela Eames was present at the opening of the exhibition and gave a talk on her work and approach. The exhibition was supported by the British Council.
