Parviz Tanavoli Jewellery
Parviz Tanavoli is a sculptor, painter, lithographer, collector and scholar of Persian Art, but considers himself a craftsman and artisan more than anything else. According to Tanavoli, the little medals and rings which he produces are not jewellery but locks, talismans, walls or textiles.
Tanavoli began creating these objects in 1970, and his inspiration comes from tiny artifact from ancient Iran such as locks, talismanic objects and prayer boxes. These objects were carried by people throughout their daily lives, and, like jewellery, could take the shape of rings or other decorative objects with sacred names and functions.
Tanavoli’s works fascinate with their stylistic characteristics and echoing of traditional Iranian culture, folk legend, religion and metaphors.
Work by Tanavoli was successfully auctioned with the help of Candlestar in October 2008 as part of Sotheby’s Modern and Contemporary Arab and Iranian Art sale.
