Prix Pictet Commission 2008 – Munem Wasif

In 2008 Pictet & Cie supported the UK charity WaterAid, which manages projects in the developing world to help communities gain access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene education. Shortlisted artist Munem Wasif was commissioned to document an area of Bangladesh with severe water issues. The images produced by Munem Wasif for the 2008 Prix Pictet Commission were first shown at the Mall Galleries, London, in March 2009.  Together they narrate a  harrowing story that tells of the daily impact of the scarcity of clean, safe water on the people of Bangladesh. The exhibition, ‘Salt Water Tears: Lives Left Behind in Satkhira, Bangladesh’, attracted considerable critical and media attention. Following the success of the London show, Wasif’s images were shown in Dresden in May and in Geneva at the Batiment des Forces Motrices in June 2009.
