Volta NY
Conceived to create a tightly focused, boutique, affair that would be a place for discovery and concentrate on current and topical art production, VOLTA NY is the American incarnation of the successful young fair founded in Basel in 2005.
In a show created in association with the Paris-based contemporary art gallery, Vanessa Quang Gallery, Candlestar will display works by the young artist, who lives and works in Iran.
Her dark and silent works underlie all the colours, shades and reflections, and create an uncomfortable sense that discovering the truth will leave you full of anxiety.
The artist talks about this insecure moment before the decision between getting closer or detach from the characters, explaining that what she knows is anxiety from one moment to the next.
“My characters on the canvas, often appear as people with identity first or they are escaping from what they are scared of, may be their own identity? Therefore, personalities never completely realize and stay as strangers in my painting even for me!”
Tarereh is one of a growing portfolio of Iranian artists that have emerged from a unique collaboration between the London-based consultancy and the Day Gallery Tehran. Shortly after Volta NY, Candlestar/Day Gallery will present the Masques of Shahrazad in London. As Candlestar Director, Fariba Farshad says, ‘This exhibition, which has been nearly two years in the making, is the first detailed survey of the work of three generations of Iranian women artists.’ Tarereh is one of 28 prominent contemporary Iranian artists taking part in Masques of Shahrazad.
