Sony World Photography Exhibition 2012
In 2012, Candlestar worked with the World Photography Organisation to curate the Sony World Photography Awards at Somerset House. This role involved selecting the works to be exhibited from a huge selection of winning and shortlisted images, liaising with artists, printers, gallerists and clients alike. We also oversaw the installation – including hanging, lighting, graphics of the work.
The awards had numerous different categories and the mapping out of the exhibition required meticulous planning in order to give a sense of cohesion to such a vast body of work. The professional category featured such photographers as Simon Norfolk, Rena Effendi, Peter Franck and Mitch Dobrowner – who was voted as the overall winner of l’Iris d’Or. Another highlight of the awards exhibition was the lifetime achievement award which was presented to William Klein. In association with the artist, his studio in Paris and his gallery in London showed a small but wonderful retrospective work.
Other sections included the Open award; which was a prize with work from entry level photographers, over a number of categories – the exhibition also hosted the Kraszna-Krausz Foundation’s book award, which highlighted the finest published photographic books.
Leading edge technology for the exhibition was provided by Sony and included LED televisions, digital photo frames and a huge Zirris Wall – essentially a huge screen on which photographs were displayed in a variety of innovative ways. This exciting mixed media show gave the exhibition a very interactive feel and hinted at possible future directions for the exhibition of photographs.
