Newsha Tavakolian was born in 1980 in Tehran where she still lives and works. As a self-taught photographer, Newsha began working as a professional photographer in the Iranian press when she was 16 years old. She started with the women’s daily newspaper Zan, and later worked with nine reformist dailies, all since banned. Newsha began working internationally, covering Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Parkistan. Her work has been published in the Time Magazine, Newsweek, Stern, Le Figaro, Colors, New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, Der Speigel, Le Monde 2, and NRC Handelsblad.
Particularly known for focusing on women’s issue, Newsha was a runner-up in the Picture of the Year International Competition, magazine feature category, National Press Photographers Association and Missouri School of Journalism, 2003.
